Chicago White Sox Edge Past Cleveland Guardians

2 hours ago 0

The Chicago White Sox secured a narrow 2-1 victory against the Cleveland Guardians at Rate Field with 28,883 fans in attendance. The win allowed the Sox to claim sole possession of the first place in the American League Central standings.

Key Moments of the Game

In the second inning, designated hitter Randal Grichuk doubled and later scored on a single by shortstop Colson Montgomery. The Sox went hitless until the fourth inning when Grichuk’s double sparked their limited offense.

Third baseman Miguel Vargas led off the sixth inning with a home run, marking his 17th of the season. These three hits were enough to defeat Cleveland, thanks in part to strong pitching performances.

Pitching Highlights

Sean Burke delivered an impressive outing, allowing one run on six hits while striking out six and walking one over 6 1/3 innings. Burke focused on maintaining control, limiting his pitch count to 90 by targeting the strike zone early. He left the game in the seventh inning after giving up a double to Austin Hedges.

Sean Newcomb took over, securing the final outs of the seventh and remaining unyielding through the last two innings. He struck out two, walked one, and did not allow a hit over his 2 2/3 innings, earning his second save of the season.

“Burke put us in a good spot to cover a lot of innings,” said manager Will Venable. “Newcomb behind him was special.”

Guardians’ Strong Pitching Efforts

Parker Messick, Cleveland’s starter, pitched a solid 7 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits with ten strikeouts and just one walk. Despite his effective performance, the Guardians failed to capitalize on their opportunities.

Guardians’ only run came from Kahlil Watson, who hit a home run to lead off the fifth inning, tying the score temporarily.

“I’m just trying to compete at this point,” said Vargas. “Let the guys behind me do the job.”

Impact on Standings

The White Sox’s victory marked their ninth consecutive home series win, propelling them one game ahead of Cleveland in the division. The Sox’s record stands at 41-37, while the Guardians hold a 41-39 record.

Vargas and Burke both emphasized the importance of the series and maintaining momentum after a challenging road trip.

“We know where we are at,” Burke said. “We’ve got to keep going like this.”
