Mamdani-Backed Candidates Win in NY Primaries

2 hours ago 0

The ‘Fox & Friends’ co-hosts voiced concerns over what they termed a ‘socialist earthquake’ in the New York Democratic primaries. Candidates supported by Zohran Mamdani secured significant victories, indicating a shift within the Democratic Party toward the far-left.

Eight years after her surprising victory against then-House Democratic Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s political prospects appear promising. The congresswoman from New York City easily defeated two primary challengers, maintaining her position and considering a possible 2028 presidential bid or a challenge against Senate Leader Chuck Schumer.

Mamdani backed three successful congressional candidates, further enhancing Ocasio-Cortez’s influence. These victories could bolster her potential future runs. Despite not participating in the New York City primaries, her broader appeal within the party endures.

“AOC has built a political brand that certainly has staying power,” said Joe Caiazzo, a strategist aligned with progressive political figures.

Sen. Bernie Sanders collaborated with Mamdani to endorse the socialist candidates. Darializa Avila Chevalier narrowly defeated incumbent Adriano Espaillat. Similarly, Claire Valdez won against Antonio Reynoso. Brad Lander also secured a victory over Dan Goldman, demonstrating the influence of the leftist movement in these primaries.

While Ocasio-Cortez distanced herself from these endorsements, the results indicate a call for systemic change within the party, according to Adam Green of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee. These developments pose challenges for established party leaders like Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries.

Speculation surrounds Ocasio-Cortez’s intentions, and the Democratic Socialists of America are already looking toward the 2028 presidential race. However, analysts caution against overinterpretation; the ultra-progressive victories in New York may not reflect broader national sentiments. Other primaries saw more traditional Democrats prevail, as in the races for Jerry Nadler’s replacement and Cait Conley’s challenge in the 17th Congressional District.

Paul Steinhauser, reporting for Fox News, highlights the appetite for progressive policies in New York City primaries but questions nationwide enthusiasm.
