In Austin, Texas, Democrats face criticism after quickly condemning Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following a shooting incident involving a suspected illegal immigrant. The incident occurred when an ICE officer shot a man, later identified as Wilber Rafael Garces Perez. Critics, including a retired police officer, voiced concerns about the Democrats’ comments.
Notable Democrats such as Rep. Greg Casar, Councilman Mike Siegel, and Mayor Kirk Watson spoke against ICE soon after the shooting, drawing attention before a full investigation had unfolded. Casar, a member of the progressive Squad caucus, participated in a press conference, highlighting concerns about ICE’s actions in Austin.
“It is awful that this war has come to our doorstep,” Casar stated, expressing frustration over the ICE presence in Austin neighborhoods.
The comments from Austin’s elected officials received backlash online, particularly from conservative voices. Former Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin questioned past reactions to crimes involving illegal immigrants in the region.
Republican State Rep. Andy Hopper criticized the rhetoric of open borders on social media, suggesting such views could disqualify anyone in public office. Meanwhile, Dennis Farris, president of the Austin Police Retired Officers Association, expressed surprise at Mayor Watson’s quick judgment, remarking that Watson’s response was unusually intense.
Beyond public statements, the incident also led to street protests in Austin, with reports of several arrests and injuries among law enforcement. Damage to police vehicles occurred during the demonstrations.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) later confirmed that Garces Perez is an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, subject to a final removal order. The shooting took place during a law enforcement operation. Garces Perez’s attorney, Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch, argues that mishaps during his asylum process, including address changes, contributed to his legal situation.
“Wilber entered through CBPOne seeking asylum,” Lincoln-Goldfinch stated, explaining the complications in his deportation case.
