Genetic Evidence and Study Findings
Published on September 3 in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, the study provides the first genetic evidence connecting GLP-1 activity with androgenetic alopecia, the most common form of hair loss in men. According to Dr. Ahmed El Muntasar, a general practitioner, the link may be due to rapid weight loss and nutrient deficiencies in those already predisposed to hair loss.
Research Details
The CDC reports that over 25% of adults with diagnosed diabetes used GLP-1 injectables in 2024, with similar usage rates among men and women. The NYU research team identified a 7% increased risk of hair loss associated with GLP-1 use, focusing on the GLP1R gene, which elevates levels of GLP-1 receptor proteins.
The study compared genetic markers linked to increased GLP-1 activity with those associated with androgenetic alopecia. The choice of male-pattern baldness was due to its well-understood genetic causes.
Beyond Rapid Weight Loss
Hair thinning has been reported by some taking GLP-1 drugs, often attributed to rapid weight loss. However, the findings indicate a deeper biological connection. The study accounted for other hair growth factors like hypertension and insulin resistance, maintaining the increased risk at 7%.
Researchers analyzed data from over 31,000 individuals in the eQTLGen database and over 205,000 men in another genetics database, most of whom were white. The shared genetic signals linked GLP-1 activity with alopecia, strengthening the case for a biological relationship.
Implications for Patients
Lynn Petukhova, a study senior investigator, suggests that if future experiments confirm these findings, men and potentially women could be screened for hair loss risk before using GLP-1 drugs. Dr. El Muntasar advises against stopping treatment based on this moderate risk, emphasizing the study’s focus on genetic data rather than direct patient monitoring.
Petukhova mentions the possibility of preventive treatment strategies, including prescribing anti-hair loss medications alongside GLP-1 therapies. Further research is needed to fully understand GLP-1-related pathways’ effects on hair follicles and whether this genetic relationship applies to women.
Androgenetic alopecia affects about half of white American men over 50. As GLP-1 drugs become more popular, understanding potential side effects and those most at risk remains crucial.
