Folarin Balogun and Weston McKennie celebrated as the U.S. team secured a decisive win against Paraguay in the World Cup match held on June 12 in Inglewood, California. The U.S. triumphed over both Paraguay and Australia, securing the top position in their group.
Regardless of the outcome of their upcoming match against Turkey, the U.S. has already won their group, ensuring advancement to the knockout round. While a victory wouldn’t alter their advancement, it would make history for the U.S. team, as they’ve never claimed more than two wins in a single World Cup.
“The group stage is not completed yet. We want to finish it on a positive note,” said defender Mark McKenzie, emphasizing their aim to maintain momentum.
With their position in the knockout round secured, the U.S. team can take tactical measures by resting key players who risk suspension due to yellow cards. Players like Antonee Robinson, Chris Richards, Tyler Adams, and Folarin Balogun are among those who may be preserved for future matches. Notably, Christian Pulisic might make his return after missing the previous game due to a calf injury.
Turkey entered the World Cup with significant expectations but faced elimination after losses to the U.S. and Paraguay. Despite their challenges, the team, with young talents such as Arda Güler and Kenan Yildiz, hopes to conclude their tournament run with a strong performance against the U.S.
Reflecting on the past, Chris Richards commented on their previous encounter in June 2025, where Turkey emerged victorious in a friendly match, “We had a young team but played with determination. We aim to give everything in the upcoming game,” he stated.
