A federal prosecutor in California has announced that investigations are underway following recent elections in the state. This move comes in the wake of President Donald Trump’s unsubstantiated allegations of election fraud.
Bill Essayli, the first assistant U.S. attorney for the Central District of California, stated on X that his office, in conjunction with the FBI, is conducting “multiple election fraud investigations.” Details of these investigations were not provided. Essayli emphasized the commitment to pursue evidence and prosecute any breaches of federal election law rigorously.
Essayli criticized California’s mail voting system, a common target of Trump’s baseless fraud claims. The FBI did not respond immediately to queries about the investigations relating to the elections in California.
Coinciding with Essayli’s statement, a federal prosecutor from the U.S. attorney’s office visited the Los Angeles County ballot processing center. The L.A. County registrar’s office informed NBC News about a government attorney’s visit for observing ballot processing activities.
The registrar’s office spokesperson detailed that the attorney was briefed on the public observation program and toured the ballot processing operations. These activities are publicly observable, and election officials regularly accommodate diverse observers, such as politicians, advocacy groups, or public members.
The Justice Department did not comment on the prosecutor’s visit. These events unfolded soon after Trump, without evidence, accused Democrats of attempting to steal the California primary elections, held on Tuesday.
Trump criticized voting delays, linking them to an investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles. California’s mail voting system, which allows ballots postmarked on or before election day and received within seven days thereafter to be counted, often takes time to declare a winner in close races.
In 2022, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, a Democrat, was declared the winner eight days after the election. Bass, who is running for another term, has advanced to the November election, according to NBC News. Mail ballots, typically counted over several days, usually favor Democratic candidates in California.
In the primary system in California, the top two candidates proceed to the general election in November, irrespective of party affiliation. The prolonged counting in primary races statewide has prompted criticism from Trump and his supporters, including Steve Hilton, a Republican gubernatorial candidate.
As of Friday evening, NBC News predicted that Democratic gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra will advance to the general election. Hilton and Democratic candidate Tom Steyer are competing for the second position. In the Los Angeles mayor’s race, Trump-endorsed Spencer Pratt is contending against Democrat Nithya Raman to challenge Bass in November.
