2 hours ago 0

A significant earthquake struck off the northern coast of Japan on Thursday, yet the nation’s meteorological agency confirmed no tsunami threat. The earthquake registered a magnitude of 7.2, occurring off the eastern coast of Iwate. This was an upgrade from an initial assessment of 6.9, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. The quake had a depth of approximately 50 kilometers (30 miles).

The U.S. Geological Survey also noted a magnitude of 6.9. This incident took place in a region where strong earthquakes have frequently occurred in recent months. One such quake earlier led to a weeklong mega-quake warning in December.

The quake hit during Thursday morning’s rush hour. It caused mild shaking in Tokyo. Currently, there are no reports of injuries or structural damage, as stated by the chief government spokesperson, Minoru Kihara. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi assured the public that the emergency team is prioritizing public safety while evaluating the situation and getting ready for any necessary relief efforts. She advised residents to remain cautious due to potential aftershocks.

Tomoko Nagane, a primary school principal in Hashikami, Aomori prefecture, shared with NHK that she experienced moderate shaking while driving when the alert went off. Children at the school were unaffected, though some were frightened. Classes were suspended for the day, and all children returned home safely.

Reports from NHK public television indicated that in several heavily impacted towns, including Sendai and Morioka, people felt the shaking but noticed no damage. Commuters continued their daily routines as normal. The East Japan Railway Co., responsible for train operations in these regions, halted some bullet trains and local services for safety inspections.

Nuclear facilities, including the Fukushima Daiichi plant, which suffered damage in the 2011 disaster, reported no irregularities. This compliance was confirmed by Minoru Kihara. The earthquake also left the spent fuel reprocessing plant in Aomori unaffected.

Japan is located in an area known as the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the most seismically active regions globally.
