The leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-un, has advanced his naval ambitions with the commissioning of the Choe Hyon, the largest warship his country has constructed to date. This 5,000-ton destroyer, unveiled at Nampo port, symbolizes North Korea’s ongoing efforts to extend its naval reach beyond coastal waters, equipped with nuclear-capable missiles.
According to state media, Kim attended the commissioning ceremony of the Choe Hyon, underscoring the nation’s intention to expand and arm its navy with nuclear weapons. The launch of the destroyer marks a significant step in North Korea’s naval evolution, following its initial test in April the previous year.
During his speech, Kim declared that the navy was engaging in ‘full-fledged service,’ affirming that the program to equip the navy with nuclear weapons was following its planned path unwaveringly.
North Korea’s navy has historically been overshadowed by the fleets of South Korea and the U.S. operating in the region. Most of its vessels, largely from the Soviet era, have been restricted to coastal patrols. However, Kim’s recent naval endeavors coincide with supplying military aid to Russia in its conflict against Ukraine. In exchange, Russia reportedly offers North Korea resources such as oil, food, and technology to aid military modernization efforts.
Recent observations by South Korean analysts indicate missile tests from the Choe Hyon incorporate Russian technology, including supersonic cruise missiles.
North Korea’s nuclear arsenal has predominantly relied on ballistic missiles due to the absence of nuclear-capable aircraft and submarines. Yet, recent developments highlight Kim’s prioritization of navy nuclearization. These include tests of submarine-launched ballistic missiles, the unveiling of a claimed nuclear-powered submarine, and the creation of unmanned underwater vehicles capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
