The owner of a well-known pro-America and President Donald Trump-themed residence in southern California has died following injuries from an alleged attack by a stranger. Police confirmed on Sunday night the death of Kerry Sheron, aged 69, after being in critical condition for several days.
Sheron, a former U.S. Army veteran, owned the home in Escondido, California, which displayed American flags and pro-Trump decorations. His property had been the target of complaints and vandalism over the years. The attack was reported to have occurred right outside this distinctive property.
According to Deputy District Attorney Ross Garcia, 32-year-old Thomas Caleb Butler allegedly attacked Sheron by punching him in the jaw, causing him to fall. Butler then reportedly struck him multiple times on the head. Sheron eventually succumbed to his injuries.
Butler was detained without any trouble after a short search and faces charges of attempted murder. The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office is currently assessing the situation to see if charges need to be adjusted.
A friend of Butler described him as a Navy veteran dealing with PTSD, stating that despite medication, his condition had been deteriorating. The friend also noted Butler’s interests in Legos and Star Wars figures.
Police responded to reports of an assault at around 2:15 p.m. near the intersection of East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street, close to the so-called ‘Trump House.’ They found Sheron suffering from severe injuries, and reported that a bystander who intervened was also injured during the attack.
Sheron’s wife, Maria Garcia, mentioned when speaking to the media that she had not expected her husband to survive the attack and believed it to be politically motivated, given the nature of the potential attacker’s actions.
According to Garcia, the political displays had evoked negative reactions, stating, “They don’t like the flags. I don’t know why. I support America. My husband is a veteran.”
