Trump Surveys Construction Projects and Discusses Golf Course Redevelopment

President Donald Trump recently evaluated several of his construction projects around Washington, D.C. Following his visit, he suggested that the redevelopment of the East Potomac Golf Links would allow it to host premier golf tournaments.

On social media, Trump stated, “When completed, this Course will have the ability to host Major Golf Tournaments, including The U.S. Open, The Ryder Cup, The PGA Championship, and other top PGA Tour events.”

During the tour, Trump was accompanied by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, various aides, and golf course architect Tom Fazio, along with his son, Gavin Fazio. However, the redevelopment of the course faces a legal challenge in U.S. District Court. The timeline for when the course could host major tournaments remains uncertain, as locations for these events are often decided several years in advance. For example, the U.S. Open sites are scheduled until 2051, with open spots in 2043, 2046, and 2048, and the PGA Championship is scheduled through 2035.

In his social media post, Trump expressed concerns about the condition of the public golf course’s grass and sprinkler system. Additionally, debris from the demolition of the White House East Wing has been dumped on the grounds. The National Park Service previously reported that this debris tested positive for lead, chromium, and other toxic metals.

Trump announced that the redevelopment work on the golf course would commence on September 1. He also inspected updates at Lafayette Park, located on the north side of the White House, and had his motorcade tour the area where he plans to build a triumphal arch.

In a separate social media post, Trump mentioned his plans to meet with Janeese Lewis George, winner of the Democratic primary for mayor of Washington, D.C. Trump referred to Lewis George as a “Communist.”

At a news conference, Lewis George stated her willingness to collaborate with anyone, including the president, for the benefit of D.C. residents. However, she emphasized that she would not agree in advance to any requests from the administration that might compromise the city’s locally elected government.
