Keiko Fujimori Secures Narrow Victory in Peru’s Presidential Election

Keiko Fujimori, the conservative candidate, has narrowly won Peru’s presidential election. The National Office for Electoral Processes (ONPE) announced her victory with 50.135% of the vote in the June 7 run-off, edging out her opponent, Roberto Sánchez. Sánchez, representing the left-wing Together for Peru party, secured 49.865% and may contest the results. Peru’s National Jury of Elections is expected to formalize the outcome soon.

Rise of the Right in Latin America

Many Latin American countries have recently seen conservative leaders coming to power. This shift is linked to dissatisfaction with economic issues and corruption involving left-wing politicians. In Peru, Keiko Fujimori expressed optimism, stating, “We are getting closer and closer to starting a path of order and hope for all Peruvians.” Her victory follows similar right-wing wins in Colombia and Honduras, aligning with a trend encouraged by endorsements from figures like former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Despite these shifts, major countries like Mexico and Brazil continue under left-leaning administrations. Meanwhile, the Trump administration had pursued a strategy called the “Donroe Doctrine,” an effort to exert increased U.S. influence in Latin America. This involved the “Shield of the Americas” initiative, a coalition of center-right and hard-right leaders embracing Trump’s political style.

Controversial Claims and Electoral Concerns

Keiko Fujimori’s party, Popular Force, won by less than 50,000 votes in an election where over 18 million ballots were cast. Roberto Sánchez alleged earlier that the election process was fraudulent, though no evidence was provided. His recent statement reasserted concerns about the integrity of the electoral process and emphasized his party’s right to challenge the results.

Keiko Fujimori’s father, Alberto Fujimori, led Peru from 1990, with his tenure being a mix of economic efforts and controversial human rights issues. Despite receiving a 25-year sentence in 2009, he was released in December 2023 on humanitarian grounds and passed away in September 2024.
