Avila Chevalier’s candidacy is backed by Zohran Mamdani, the Mayor of New York City, as well as the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). Despite facing criticism for earlier posts disparaging the police and the American flag, she prevailed over the incumbent Democratic Rep. Adriano Espaillat in the 13th Congressional District’s Democratic primary.
