San Francisco Squatter-House Fetches High Price Despite Neglect

1 month ago 0

A home in San Francisco with a notable history of squatter occupation is on the market for $1.3 million. Despite its significant neglect, it already has a buyer.

Located on Yukon Street, near the Castro neighborhood, the 2,100-square-foot abandoned home has been inhabited by squatters for the past five years, according to the San Francisco Standard. Neighbors have often called the police due to issues with drugs, noise, and other disturbances.

Photos of the property show boarded-up doors, broken windows, and graffiti-covered walls. Local reports reveal the presence of hypodermic needles, and squatters have left a bucket on the top-floor deck for waste.

San Francisco Property with Squatters

The home lacks running water and electricity, as reported by NBC Bay Area. Despite these challenges, listing agents Zara and James Rowbotham noted the property has experienced “nonstop” interest. It is already under contract, according to Vanguard Properties.

The swift sale highlights the demand for properties in San Francisco, even those in poor condition. Zara Rowbotham commented that if the home were a single-family residence, it could have sold for around $2 million swiftly.

Squatting Concerns in California

This sale comes as squatting incidents rise across California and nationally. A New York Times report on a 2024 survey found that 76% of California property owners see squatting as a major issue. 70% had been victimized or knew someone who had.

States have responded by passing laws enabling immediate arrests of unauthorized occupants, sidelining court delays. However, California remains stringent. Property owners must undergo a long civil eviction process to remove squatters.

Under California law, squatters may claim ownership legally if they occupy and pay property taxes for five continuous years.
