Melat Kiros Wins Democratic Primary in Colorado’s 1st Congressional District

Melat Kiros has won the Democratic primary for the U.S. House in her Denver-area district, marking a significant political shift. According to an AP race call, she defeated longtime incumbent Democrat Diana DeGette. Kiros, a 29-year-old Ph.D. student and lawyer, stands on the brink of becoming the first Gen Z woman elected to Congress. Her victory is a landmark as she challenges a 15-term incumbent who had been in office since 1997, the year Kiros was born.

Kiros’ win is part of a wider movement among Democrats urging a transition to younger, more left-leaning candidates. This movement seeks to challenge current political norms and practices. An Ethiopian immigrant, Kiros supports economic populist policies. Her proposals include universal healthcare and childcare. She also endorses more contentious policies like abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement and ending U.S. military aid to Israel.

Kiros has refused money from corporate political action committees and pro-Israel lobbying groups. She criticized DeGette’s history of accepting contributions from defense contractors and companies in the energy and pharmaceutical sectors. DeGette, during her campaign, emphasized her progressive stance on healthcare and climate policy.

This triumph for Kiros is also a significant achievement for the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). It comes shortly after two DSA-backed candidates won their own primary contests in New York City House races. Darializa Avila Chevalier defeated incumbent Adriano Espaillat, and Claire Valdez won the race to replace retiring Rep. Nydia Velázquez. Additionally, state Rep. Chris Rabb secured a primary victory in Pennsylvania’s 3rd Congressional district earlier this year.

If successful in November, Kiros would join a small group of democratic socialists in Congress, where currently only Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and Rep. Rashida Tlaib identify with the label. Kiros would also be among the few Gen Z members in the House, joining Florida Democrat Maxwell Frost, who was elected in 2022.

In a February NPR interview, Kiros highlighted the appeal her platform has with younger voters. “Young people understand that we are in the fight of our lives,” Kiros stated. “We need leaders who are fighting for bold policies that achieve real change. They refuse to settle, wait for a turn, or seek permission.”
