The German software company SAP is focusing on transforming jobs rather than eliminating them, according to their recent strategy. The company believes that as artificial intelligence (AI) integrates more into their operations, there is potential for job reinvention.
At SAP’s global headquarters in Walldorf, Germany, and a nearby professional soccer training center in Zuzenhausen, executives discuss their plans. They aim to adapt roles affected by AI rather than cut them completely. This comes after SAP’s restructuring phase two years ago, which included significant job cuts, partly driven by AI advancements. However, SAP remains committed to creating more valuable roles helped by technology.
One example given is Fabrizio Primerano, a software engineer at SAP. Primerano describes how AI now handles many routine tasks previously part of his role. This shift allows him to focus more on creative work like managing and mentoring AI systems. SAP’s goal is to harness these changes to encourage employees to develop new skills and take on new roles within the company.
SAP’s CEO, Christian Klein, expressed uncertainty about traditional coding jobs in the future but emphasized that the company envisions a different kind of workforce. Klein predicts that while overall staff numbers might remain constant, the nature and focus of roles will shift considerably.
Despite the challenges posed by AI, SAP has been proactive in creating opportunities. The company has introduced new job titles such as ‘forward-deployed engineers’—professionals who collaborate with clients to implement AI solutions.
