Ohio Authorities Arrest Four as 16 Children Rescued from Deplorable Conditions

In a significant development in Hamden, Ohio, authorities arrested four individuals following the discovery of 16 children living in unacceptable and unsafe conditions. State Attorney General Andy Wilson disclosed these details during a news conference.

During a search of the rural home, located about 60 miles southeast of Columbus, officials found these children requiring immediate medical attention. Wilson expressed shock at the conditions, describing them as unimaginable for anyone to endure, especially children.

The situation was so dire that two children needed to be airlifted to Level 1 trauma centers. “If action had delayed by even 24 hours, the risk of fatalities among the children was high,” Wilson shared.

Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain detailed the home’s dismal state, reporting extensive bacterial contamination and the presence of fecal matter. “The livestock received better care than the children,” Cain noted.

Authorities charged the suspects, identified as Gary Siders Sr., Gary Siders Jr., Christina Siders, and Elizabeth Siders, with 16 counts of second-degree child endangerment. A judge has set their bond at $300,000, with not guilty pleas entered on their behalf at the initial court appearance.

The children, aged between 18 months and 18 years, included both boys and girls. Officials have yet to confirm their familial relationships. Vinton County Prosecutor William Archer stated the situation stemmed from intra-family issues, dismissing concerns of broader risk to other children from human trafficking.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine commented on the gravity of the case, expressing distress over the children’s living and medical conditions. He commended the swift actions of children’s services, law enforcement, and medical staff in addressing the crisis.
