Governor Abbott Appoints Don Huffines as State Comptroller

Governor Greg Abbott of Texas has appointed Don Huffines, a former political opponent and immigration hard-liner, as state comptroller. This decision signifies a strategic move by the GOP to reinforce party unity as the midterm elections approach.

Don Huffines, a notable figure in Texas politics, previously served as a state senator and is a prominent real estate developer in the Dallas area. In 2022, he challenged Governor Abbott for re-election, arguing that the governor’s policies were insufficiently conservative.

Currently, with Democrats gaining momentum for the forthcoming elections, Governor Abbott and other Texas Republicans are striving to consolidate their party. Mr. Huffines, having emerged victorious in the Republican primary in March, is the party’s nominee for comptroller. He succeeded in defeating the acting comptroller, Kelly Hancock, who was appointed by Governor Abbott and also endorsed by him in the race. Mr. Hancock announced his resignation by the end of the month.

In his announcement, Governor Abbott praised Mr. Huffines as possessing “the right mix of business experience and conservative principles” for the position. He described him as a “proven conservative leader who prioritizes taxpayers.”

The comptroller’s position holds significant political weight as it manages public accounts and oversees a key program of Governor Abbott. This program involves using public funds for private school education. The voucher system is a contentious issue, facing opposition from Democrats and some rural Republicans, and is set to commence its first school year this fall.
