Iran Holds Funeral for Late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei

The Iranian capital, Tehran, is witnessing a multi-day funeral for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the late Supreme Leader of Iran, who passed away following an airstrike at the start of the war. He was 86 at the time of his death. The ceremony kicked off on a somber note, with his casket unveiled at the Grand Mosalla in a glass case, drawing mourners who expressed their grief and called for revenge.

People carried banners and flags, mourning in the traditional Shiite manner with synchronized chest-beating. Among those paying respects was Hananeh Mousavi, 27, who attended with her mother, deeply moved by the loss. An outdoor stage at the Grand Mosalla resembled the one destroyed in the Israeli airstrike that claimed Khamenei’s life.

The caskets of his family members, also victims of the strike, were displayed beside his, with his distinguished black turban placed atop. Iran anticipates a massive public turnout similar to the 1989 burial of Ayatollah Khomeini. Organizers made provisions for the mourners, distributing water and drinks to cope with the heat.

Ali Kazemi from Tabriz traveled to Tehran to express unity in defending the nation and religion. The event offers a platform for the Iranian government to assert its influence, especially as it negotiates ending the war with the U.S. amidst Israeli threat concerns.

Coinciding with America’s 250th anniversary, the funeral evoked anti-American sentiments, with participants shouting slogans against the U.S. At Mount Rushmore, President Trump addressed the situation, highlighting ongoing tensions.

In Tehran, the funeral impacted daily life with closures and restrictions. The presence of the new supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, remains unconfirmed. His late wife’s coffin was part of the solemn display, symbolizing personal and national loss. Tensions persist as Israeli threats loom, prompting military warnings.
