White Sox Fall to Guardians in Ten-Inning Clash

On Friday in Cleveland, Miguel Vargas of the Chicago White Sox delivered a remarkable performance. He turned a ten-pitch at-bat into a three-run home run against the Cleveland Guardians in the fifth inning. Despite his efforts, the Sox eventually fell 4-3 in a ten-inning contest at Progressive Field.

After Vargas’s home run, a rain delay halted the game for nearly two hours. When play resumed, the Sox saw their lead vanish. The game concluded with Kahlil Watson of the Guardians hitting a walk-off single in extra innings, securing the win for Cleveland.

White Sox Manager Will Venable expressed his thoughts on the tough loss. “You have to find a way to score more runs,” he stated. He acknowledged the effective bullpen of the Guardians, emphasizing the difficulty in scoring and preventing runs.

The loss marked the second consecutive walk-off defeat for the Sox, dropping them to a 45-42 record. They are now one game behind the Guardians, who lead the American League Central with a 47-42 record.

White Sox starter Anthony Kay pitched four innings, allowing one run on one hit. Travis Bazzana drove in the sole run against him in the third inning. Kay expressed frustration about the rain delay, which cut his outing short.

“I was hoping to go six, seven, eight innings, give the bullpen some help,” Kay said.

Sox reliever Seranthony Domínguez struggled in the seventh inning, issuing two walks. Venable believed Domínguez was better than his stats indicated, attributing challenges to close calls and unreviewed plays.

Pitching in relief, Bryan Hudson struck out Daniel Schneemann. However, Austin Hedges hit a grounder leading to a costly error by shortstop Colson Montgomery, which let Rhys Hoskins score and reduced the Sox’s lead. Steven Kwan later tied the game with a single.

In the extra innings, Kwan was placed at second as the automatic runner and soon advanced to third. Watson followed with a single to center, sealing the victory for the Guardians.

Reflecting on the loss, Vargas commented favorably on the team’s performance despite the setback.
“I think we are playing two really good games and sometimes that’s how baseball works,” he said.
