The impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte of the Philippines is scheduled to start on Monday. This development marks a significant conflict between the country’s two prominent political families. Ms. Duterte, the daughter of a former president, faces accusations of embezzlement and betrayal of public trust. She allegedly threatened to assassinate President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
This political rift emerged four years after the Marcos and Duterte families allied in the 2022 election. Ms. Duterte, elected as vice president after joining Mr. Marcos’s ticket, has firmly denied the allegations. She claims these accusations aim to obstruct her ambitions to run for president in 2028. Her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, is currently imprisoned in The Hague on charges of crimes against humanity related to his controversial drug war.
Last month, Ms. Duterte’s legal team criticized the case as ‘constitutionally infirm, procedurally defective, and substantively deficient.’ In the Philippines, similar to the system in the United States, the Senate conducts impeachment trials and makes decisions regarding the conviction of officials impeached by the House of Representatives.
Ms. Duterte has faced impeachment twice. Members of the Philippines House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly for her impeachment in May.
