The Return of ‘The Passion of the Christ’ to Theaters and Upcoming Sequel

Mel Gibson’s renowned film, The Passion of the Christ, will be shown again in theaters across the nation for a brief engagement this September. This move comes as anticipation grows for its upcoming sequel, set for 2027. Lionsgate and Fathom Entertainment revealed that the 2004 movie, which narrates the final 12 hours of Jesus Christ’s life, will return to screens from September 10 to September 17. The film has undergone a remastering process, now available in 4K and with Dolby Atmos sound.

Audiences will also be treated to an exclusive preview of the sequel titled The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One, scheduled for release on May 6, 2027. The subsequent sequel, Part Two, is set to debut on May 25, 2028, during Memorial Day weekend.

The Passion of the Christ

The movie originally debuted with Jim Caviezel portraying Jesus of Nazareth. It quickly became a blockbuster, earning over $610 million worldwide against a budget of $30 million. The film was not without controversy, known for its intense violence and subject matter, though it garnered Academy Award nominations for makeup, score, and cinematography. For two decades, it held the record for the highest-grossing domestic R-rated film until surpassed by Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024.

According to Ray Nutt, Chief Executive Officer of Fathom Entertainment, the film made a considerable impact on the cultural landscape, bridging faith-based and secular audiences. It paved the way for future religious-themed projects.

Actor changes will occur in the sequels, with Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen taking on the role of Jesus due to technical challenges in de-aging and scheduling issues. Mariela Garriga replaces Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene.

Mel Gibson mentioned that the sequels will delve into ‘spiritual realms’ and the existential struggle for humanity’s soul. He describes the project as crucial to his career, stating it required full commitment and dedication to convey what he terms ‘the most important story in human history.’
