A thick fog obscured Navy Pier’s Fourth of July fireworks display on Saturday night. The event was promoted as the largest and longest in the pier’s history, celebrating America’s 250th anniversary. However, spectators could only see colors through the fog due to the weather conditions.
Rain affected the region on Saturday, with a severe thunderstorm warning in Cook County until 7 p.m. Despite this, the fireworks show continued as planned. Navy Pier released a statement on social media the following morning. They expressed disappointment in the fog’s impact on the fireworks’ visibility and acknowledged its effect on guests’ experiences.
“We are disappointed with the effect fog had on tonight’s Independence Day Fireworks visibility and understand it impacted our guests’ experience.”
Navy Pier will continue to hold free fireworks displays on Wednesday and Saturday nights until Labor Day. Additionally, they announced an offering of free Centennial Wheel rides on Wednesday nights from 6 p.m. as a gesture of goodwill, continuing through Labor Day.
