California’s Highway 101 Rest Area Closures Due to Water Shortage

Travelers on California’s Highway 101, one of the most scenic routes in the state, should plan their summer trips carefully. The closure of roadside rest areas in both directions of the highway is causing inconvenience. The northbound and southbound Gaviota Roadside Rest Areas in Santa Barbara County have been closed since July 1. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) expects them to remain shut until at least October 1 due to a water shortage.

This closure impacts a heavily traveled section near the Gaviota Tunnel, a key route between Buellton and Goleta. According to local reports, travelers face a 35-mile stretch without access to state-operated roadside restrooms, adding to their planning challenges. The closure is attributed to inadequate water supply rather than routine facility maintenance.

The Gaviota rest areas are a crucial stop in one of California’s busiest coastal corridors. Commuters, tourists, and long-distance travelers use this route between Southern and Central California. Water scarcity has led Caltrans to urge travelers to map out alternate stops for fuel, food, and restroom breaks before setting off.

Local indications suggest the facilities rely on a water source from an inland spring that is not under Caltrans’ control. This is not the first time these rest areas have faced prolonged closures. Similar circumstances led to an extended shutdown last summer as well.

In addition to the Gaviota closures, Kern County is also experiencing temporary shutdowns. Caltrans closed rest areas on both sides of Interstate 5 at Tejon Pass while upgrading water and wastewater facilities. This project is expected to continue until August 2027.

These closures have stirred discussions among drivers frequenting these routes. Many report that the Gaviota rest areas are regularly shut down. As one observer humorously noted, “Keeping the Gaviota rest stop open longer than six months… impossible!” Another shared their experience, recalling that the rest areas tend only to be open during holidays.
