Durban July: A Celebration of Luxury and High Society in South Africa

In South Africa, the annual Durban July event serves as a celebration of luxury and high society. This event, now in its 130th year, is a daylong horse racing affair held in Durban.

During the event, guests gather to enjoy opulence that was once out of reach for many. Plates of oysters, prawns, and sushi adorn tables while soothing R&B music provides a backdrop. Bartenders pour sparkling wine as attendees, dressed in fitted suits and ornate floral headpieces, socialize.

A symbol of progress, the Durban July attracts a racially diverse crowd. Notably, in 2021, Ashwin Reynolds became the first person of color to own the horse that won the main race. As a child, he recorded horse racing bets for his grandfather, never imagining he would later enjoy such luxuries at a racetrack in Durban.

This is the most lucrative horse racing event in Africa, bringing together various elements beyond the races themselves.

Held on South Africa’s south coast, the event features music, fashion, and food, allowing attendees to temporarily escape the ongoing economic and social hardships. More than a dozen V.I.P. tents, or marquees, set up across the grassy infield, charge hundreds of dollars for tables offering banquettes, bottle service, and buffets.

The marquees serve as networking hubs for different industries including fashion, music, and politics. Up-and-coming artists may meet established producers, while entrepreneurs might seek to establish connections with politicians.

The Durban July provides a glimpse into a high society experience in a country where many have faced historical exclusion from such spheres of luxury. The event shines a light on how unity and diversity play out in South Africa’s changing social landscape.
