Socialist Twitch host Hasan Piker expressed his disapproval, criticizing the use of public resources for such a lavish display.
“This is a dramatic misuse of public resources,” Piker stated. “Even beloved public figures, if they are billionaires, continue to act like billionaires.”
Despite the celebrity couple’s well-known support from the left, including Swift’s endorsement of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, the wedding reignited debates over her billionaire status. The event led to street closures in Manhattan, coinciding with crowded holiday-weekend conditions and ongoing World Cup games.
The wedding guest list included 1,000 attendees, with many details kept private. Swift reportedly wore a Christian Dior gown, and guests engaged in a lavish prize raffle. As with other large events at Madison Square Garden, the wedding caused street closures, affecting nearby transportation like Penn Station.
Democratic Socialists of America’s Emma Vigeland shared her criticism on social media, echoing concerns about the excessiveness of the wedding. “Amidst worldwide suffering, the ultra-wealthy have no compunction,” she posted on X.
The wedding also drew comments from notable Democratic figures, including Fabien Levy, former NYC Mayor Eric Adams’ spokesman. He commented on the inconvenience to local residents and the impact on city resources.
“This wedding inconveniences thousands, impacts the nation’s largest transit hub, and diverts police resources,” Levy pointed out.
The White House even joined the conversation with humor, sharing a meme related to the event’s fanfare.
