Sources informed CBS News that flights were halted, resulting in over a hundred cancellations.

The airport, located in a highly congested airspace, faced a complete cessation of commercial flights from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET. Data from FlightAware indicated that over 300 flights encountered delays, with at least 126 cancellations during this period.

The region’s airspace is notably busy, with commercial flights intersecting with military traffic and avoiding federal buildings. Efforts were made by the White House and Federal Aviation Administration to manage these disruptions. Updates were shared to mitigate the impact while the prime minister’s visit was in progress. Some flights were permitted to land or depart during the closure to alleviate the situation.

Meetings between President Trump and Prime Minister al-Zaidi centered around U.S.-Iraqi relations. The president extended the discussion by inviting the Iraqi leader to an unscheduled lunch, describing a “tremendous chemistry” between them. Al-Zaidi’s motorcade later traveled through DCA airspace under tight security measures, including a helicopter escort.

Al-Zaidi’s leadership follows a promise from President Trump to withdraw U.S. support should an Iran-aligned candidate prevail in Iraqi elections. The Iraqi government’s stance on disarming pro-Iranian militias remains a critical issue, especially with upcoming U.S. troop withdrawals.
