Tragic Boat Accident Near Alcatraz Island

On Tuesday, a pontoon boat capsized and sank close to San Francisco’s Alcatraz Island, resulting in one fatality and three missing individuals, officials reported.

Rescue teams managed to save sixteen individuals from the water, most of whom were part of a memorial service involving family members.

San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen stated that upon arrival, responders discovered a three-deck pontoon vessel nearly submerged, with the engine still operational and leaking fuel.

The victim was retrieved from the icy waters by rescuers but succumbed to their condition later. Additionally, a dog on the boat perished.

Three individuals sustained injuries upon falling from the boat and are receiving medical care at a hospital. Meanwhile, authorities are conducting a search for the missing persons on the western side of the Golden Gate Bridge. This search operation includes divers, helicopters, and boats, and is anticipated to proceed overnight.

After interviewing witnesses, officials revised the number of missing persons from two to three. Crispen emphasized, “Right now we are in full rescue mode.”

In a social media update on Tuesday evening, the U.S. Coast Guard confirmed that search and rescue operations were “ongoing.” They assured that further updates would be shared as new information becomes accessible.
