The U.S. government will impose a 25% tariff on Brazilian goods starting next week, citing unfair trade practices by Brazil. This decision aims to address concerns over trade imbalance between the two nations.
The tariff will impact thousands of products from Brazil. However, key exports like oil, gas, beef, coffee, oranges, and aircraft parts are exempt. Brazilian ethanol, though, will face the new charges.
Previously, the U.S. imposed a 40% tariff on Brazilian exports. In November, President Trump reduced some tariffs after discussions with Brazil’s President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
In February, a Supreme Court ruling declared Trump’s emergency law use for tariff implementation unlawful. Consequently, existing tariffs were removed, except for a temporary 10% tariff set to expire this month.
The U.S. launched an inquiry into Brazil’s trade activities using Section 301 last July. This law will now enforce the new tariff, with further tariffs on other countries likely in the future.
