A recreational boat, Volare, met with tragedy in the San Francisco Bay on Tuesday, resulting in the death of one person and leaving three others missing. The boat sank after being struck by a wave, causing it to roll on its side and eventually submerge. This incident unfolded while 20 people were onboard, and 16 were rescued by emergency responders.
Clifford Joseph Boisa, 79, who was from Sutter County, California, died from injuries sustained during the accident. The passengers, described by authorities as close friends and family, had gathered on the boat to scatter the ashes of a loved one in the water.
“The boat lost stability after being hit by a wave,” said Captain Jarod Toczko of the U.S. Coast Guard. “Several people fell overboard as it rolled onto its right side.”
In a press conference, Captain Toczko explained that the boat started taking on water after tilting, and when rescue teams arrived at 3:30 p.m., the boat’s two lower decks were already underwater.
Efforts to find the missing individuals around Alcatraz Island continued, but authorities eventually decided to end the search. This decision was accompanied by somber descriptions given by rescuers about survivors who struggled to stay afloat in the bay.
