Tragic Bangkok Music Bar Fire Claims More Than 30 Lives

The recent fire at a music bar in Bangkok, Thailand, on July 13, 2026, resulted in over 30 fatalities, with four out of the six core members of the performing band, Totsakan, among those lost. The blaze has deeply impacted the community, leading to widespread expressions of sadness and demands for accountability.

Band Member’s Family Reacts

The sister of the late keyboard player Preutthipong Pudmon, Chanyanuch Pudmon, shared her thoughts as she and her family retrieved his body. “If I can be his representative, I think he would say he doesn’t want to see everyone sad and cry,” she said. She urged people to remember his smile and passion for music.

Details of the Tragic Incident

The fire, which erupted on a Sunday night, claimed at least 33 lives and left dozens injured. At the time of the report, 17 remained hospitalized with critical injuries. According to Wiroon Supasingsiripreecha, chief of the forensic institute, smoke inhalation was the leading cause of death, though some victims suffered fatal burns.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Authorities are analyzing if the venue’s ceiling was coated with flammable soundproofing foam, whether exits were accessible, and if the venue was properly registered.

Totsakan Band’s Role

Totsakan, the house band, was known for playing roots music on modern instruments, a style popularly enjoyed across rural areas. As the fire started, band members noticed a spark from a circuit breaker. It quickly engulfed the ceiling, suspected to have had highly combustible materials.

Panic ensued as patrons scrambled for a limited number of narrow exits in complete darkness. Even after firefighters controlled the fire, the fate of many patrons remained uncertain.

A Personal Loss for the Band’s Leader

Atipat Wijan, known as “Ice,” the band’s leader and singer, recounted his painful experience. He learned from the bass player that Nahatai Sajjalert, nicknamed “Breeze,” the lead singer and his girlfriend, was undergoing CPR at the scene. Despite efforts, she could not be revived. “She wasn’t burned at all. Her body was completely intact. She just looked like she was peacefully asleep,” Ice remembered.

Miscommunication also led Ice to momentarily believe that keyboardist Preutthipong had survived, when in reality, he had not escaped the blaze. Another tragedy hit when Nattapat Thamnita, “Biw,” the drummer, evacuated critically injured, succumbed to his injuries.

Continued Tragedy as Another Member Passes

Further extending the grief, Thitiwat Kaewkanha, “Din,” another male singer, died in the hospital. Initially thought dead, he was later found hospitalized with severe burns. His passing left the community devastated.

Seeking Justice and Compensation

Affected families and survivors visited a police station to claim compensation and provide testimony. Natthaphong Lakhorn, 26, who was at the scene, described seeing white smoke, initially mistaking it for dry ice. “When the fire broke, I just ran, and then all power went out,” he stated. His escape was facilitated by a security guard, using a flashlight, contrary to police reports alleging the back door was unused.

Kanticha Singkhon, 25, retrieved belongings of her deceased mother, affirming that future responsibilities for her younger brother now fell on her shoulders. The bar owners’ lawyer mentioned initial compensations of 10,000 baht (approximately $300) for survivors and affected families, which many, like Kanticha, consider insufficient.
