DHS Reports Potential Noncitizen Voter Registrations

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) informed election officials in California, New Jersey, Nevada, and Pennsylvania of preliminary findings showing more than 256,000 potential noncitizen voter registrations in these states. This information comes from letters obtained by Fox News Digital.

In letters sent last Friday, DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin noted the department reviewed voter registration records alongside federal immigration data, identifying thousands of possible matches. Mullin encouraged state election officials to collaborate with DHS to verify these identities before taking any action.

The department’s letter estimated there could be up to 190,832 noncitizens registered in California, 35,152 in New Jersey, 15,903 in Nevada, and 14,576 in Pennsylvania. DHS found matches involving names, birth dates, addresses, and Social Security numbers of 81,336 California registrants, 19,497 in New Jersey, 8,576 in Nevada, and 8,594 in Pennsylvania, all corresponding to noncitizens in DHS records.

Many non-citizens are legally issued Social Security numbers, including lawful permanent residents, individuals authorized to work in the U.S., and certain visa holders.

DHS used Social Security numbers, among other identifiers, to align voter registration records with immigration records. The findings are described as preliminary, with Secretary Mullin emphasizing the need for collaboration to ensure accuracy.

Mullin stated that only U.S. citizens should vote in federal elections to uphold election integrity. He mentioned that even one noncitizen voting compromises another citizen’s vote. States manage voter registration rolls, while the federal government oversees the immigration records vital for verifying citizenship status.

The letters urged state secretaries to respond by July 24, enabling DHS to share necessary records and assist in verifying eligibility before future federal elections.

No immediate comments were provided by California Secretary of State Shirley Weber, Pennsylvania Secretary of State Al Schmidt, New Jersey Secretary of State Dale Caldwell, or Nevada Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar.

This initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance collaboration between states and federal agencies regarding election security and voter eligibility, with the belief that federal immigration records can help maintain accurate voter rolls.
