Celebrating the Fourth of July with Patriotic Enthusiasm

Americans are known for their bold displays of patriotism. On July 4th, the country embraces large flags, elaborate barbecues, and various items embellished with national symbols. Fighter jets often soar above, leaving trails of red, white, and blue smoke, and marching bands add to the festive atmosphere. Across the nation, people engage in hot dog eating contests to express their competitive love for the country’s independence from monarchical rule.

The holiday previously evoked a sense of nostalgia. Attendees wore informal attire like dad jeans and cropped tops, creating an environment that was both charmingly awkward and warmly inclusive. The collective effort to don patriotic outfits contributed to the unique ambience of national celebrations.

Despite the kitschy and comical elements, participating in these traditions often filled many, including myself, with pride and excitement. This feeling was especially pronounced during my early years in Washington, D.C., a city I moved to over three decades ago for a career at The Washington Post. Washington revealed its inefficiencies but also its idealism, attracting ambitious individuals dedicated to public service rather than financial sectors like Wall Street or Silicon Valley. Among them were accomplished women excelling in complex areas such as counterterrorism, international development, and global finance.

One memorable summer, a friend invited me to watch the Fourth of July fireworks from the White House grounds. The vibrant colors lighting up the sky were spectacular, especially against the iconic backdrop of the White House, Washington Monument, and National Mall. Witnessing such a display in the heart of the nation carried a unique significance.

This year’s Fourth of July is particularly noteworthy, marking a climax in the yearlong celebration of the nation’s 250th birthday. Washington is adorned with the familiar red, white, and blue bunting, decorating both federal buildings and charming rowhouses. Buildings host enormous flags, enveloping structures in patriotic grandeur, while visitors garb themselves in attire akin to “The Star-Spangled Banner”. The usual influx of tourists has transformed into a vibrant spectacle, with individuals sporting T-shirts proclaiming U.S.A., flag-themed shorts, and star-studded caps.
