Escalation of Conflict Between Iran and the U.S.

Iran and the United States intensified their military actions into Friday, with the U.S. targeting bridges, rail lines, and a maritime observation tower. Footage and reports from Iranian state media show significant damage to infrastructure, including bridges and railways.

The conflict has expanded as Iran retaliated by targeting countries that host U.S. military bases. Kuwait reported impacts on power and water plants due to these strikes. This escalation follows a declaration from President Trump that a cease-fire agreement with Iran was terminated over a week ago.

Since then, both U.S. and Iranian forces have engaged in daily attacks, with President Trump threatening to destroy civilian infrastructure to pressure Iran into a deal that would permanently stop the conflict and prevent Iranian nuclear development.

Legal experts note that civilian infrastructure, such as water treatment plants, is typically not considered valid military targets, and striking them might constitute a war crime. In contrast, targeting railroads and bridges could have military justification if they are used to transport troops or weapons.

U.S. Central Command oversees American forces in the region and confirmed strikes on Iran for the seventh consecutive night without detailing specific targets. Iranian state media reported blasts in Sirik, a port city featuring Iranian naval bases, marking previous U.S. attack sites.

A statement from Central Command on Thursday highlighted earlier strikes on various Iranian military targets, including coastal surveillance sites and air defense locations, without addressing Iranian reports about damage to bridges and railroads. They reported destroying a port surveillance tower used by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps for monitoring commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
