Spanish Goalkeeper Borja Iglesias Faces a Major Moment During World Cup Final

Spanish goalkeeper Borja Iglesias is set to play in the most significant match of his career, the World Cup final against Argentina. The match will take place on Sunday afternoon at New York/New Jersey Stadium. For Spain, a victory would not only be triumphant but also involve shaking hands with President Donald Trump. However, Borja Iglesias has expressed his lack of enthusiasm for meeting the president.

In a conversation with the Spanish media on Saturday, Iglesias shared his reluctance about shaking Trump’s hand. He stated, “I don’t want to go to prison,” referring to the handshake, reported by All Out Soccer. He added, “I hope to greet him at a time when we are all very happy and that it passes quickly so I can forget about it.”

Iglesias emphasized that creating controversy is not his goal at this time. He believes people are aware of his opinions and said, “The reality is that even if people think I am all-powerful, I don’t have that much power to tackle certain things.”

Iglesias has been a vocal supporter of pro-Palestinian protesters and previously opposed the former Spanish soccer federation head, who resigned after inappropriate behavior post-FIFA Women’s World Cup. He shared his thoughts on President Trump, saying that Trump “struggles” with individuals who advocate for progress and fundamental values.

President Trump is expected at the World Cup final. He has previously participated in trophy presentations, such as at the FIFA Club World Cup. He also received the FIFA Peace Prize from Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA, during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Official Draw at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, on December 5, 2025.

The highly anticipated match between Spain and Argentina will kick off at 3 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on FOX.
