Former DSA Member Warns of Communist Influence in the Party

Jake Altman, a former member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), voiced concerns about the organization’s direction in an interview. Altman claims communists have overtaken the DSA and warns that similar tactics are being used to shift the Democratic Party further to the left.

Altman stated to Fox News, “Their organization has been captured.” He expressed concern over the resistance to anti-communism within the DSA, calling it dangerous, even for its moderate wing.

Members of the DSA gathered outside a Trump-owned building during a May Day rally in New York City in 2019. Altman, speaking on the “Saturday in America” program, described the organization as not “harmless.” He claimed its members are open to alliances with more extreme groups like Maoists, Trotskyists, and Leninists. According to him, these affiliations aim to dismantle American institutions.

“People who want to pull down American institutions and are very clear about it. People who have this thrill to violence. That is just profoundly troubling at a time when our country is already facing many problems,” Altman commented.

Several Democratic socialists, including Darializa Avila Chevalier, Claire Valdez, and Brad Lander, have gained national attention in New York. Altman mentioned that warnings about the group’s radical direction surfaced nearly a decade ago. During a debate, he realized that the direction was not merely a small faction but was supported by a cluster around “Jacobin” magazine.

He recalled debating with Leninists who dismissed Bernie Sanders as a socialist. “Now we’re hearing that from the DSA, right? Bernie Sanders, AOC, they’re not real socialists,” he noted. Altman criticized the extremism and radicalism present within the DSA, suggesting that its executive board is filled with extremist caucuses.

Altman called upon Democrats to counter the “radicalized base” as far-left DSA candidates win across the nation. “These people are not operating in good faith,” he argued. “DSA members are not in the Democratic Party to operate in good faith.” Altman stressed that they would target moderate and progressive Democrats, aiming for power by any means necessary.
