Usha Vance Welcomes Fourth Child, Continues to Balance Family and Vice Presidency Role

Usha Vance, the second lady, delivered her fourth child on Sunday, according to an announcement made by Vance’s office on social media platform X. The Vance family expressed their joy in a statement, saying, “We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning. Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother.”

Usha Vance is notable as the first second lady since the 1870s to give birth while her husband serves as vice president. She is married to Vice President JD Vance. Together, they have three other young children: two boys and one girl, aged between 4 and 9.

While promoting his book earlier this year, Vice President Vance mentioned he would likely not take parental leave following his son’s birth. The couple first revealed the pregnancy in January, indicating an expected due date in late July. During a March event at the White House in Michigan, the vice president, who is a potential presidential candidate for 2028, shared how he had to persuade his wife for a fourth child. “I remember when we decided to run for vice president, I said, ‘Honey, I really want to have a fourth kid.’ And she said, ‘Well, you can become vice president or you can have a fourth baby,’” Vance stated. “But, ladies and gentlemen, I am persuasive, because I got both.”

Later, in an NBC News interview that same month, Usha Vance confirmed that her husband convinced her about having a fourth child. She stressed that she “never closed the door on that.” After giving birth to their daughter, she initially felt their family was complete. Yet, over time, she warmed up to the idea of expanding their family. “As time passed,” she explained, “I realized that I was feeling more and more, kind of, excited about that possibility. And so if there was a chance, I should take it, and I knew that I’d be happy if we only had three kids, and I knew that I’d be happy if we had four. And so here we are.”

In related news, the vice president and second lady are reportedly contemplating renting a house in Middleburg, Virginia. This property would be separate from their current residence at the Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C. To accommodate this new potential living arrangement, the Secret Service is planning additional security measures for the rural location.
