Once celebrated as a glamorous coastal town on the French Riviera, Saint-Tropez is now facing challenges as tourist numbers swell. Traditionally a destination for celebrities and the ultra-wealthy, the location is increasingly attracting influencers who highlight its designer shops and scenic waterfront.
Luxury travel influencer JQ Louise, visiting Saint-Tropez for 15 years, emphasized the town’s current situation as “packed.” While social media has expanded its audience, Louise noted, “Influencers have truly captured its picturesque nature. Saint-Tropez is a dream destination.” However, such exposure has its downsides, especially during peak summer months.
Saint-Tropez was a quiet fishing village, but the 1950s saw it evolve into a global hotspot, sparking a prolonged tourism boom.
With only around 4,000 permanent residents, the town struggles to accommodate up to 80,000 daily visitors during July and August. Mayor Sylvie Siri has publicly urged travelers to consider visiting in the off-season.
On a luxury travel forum, users expressed their concerns regarding the crowds. Comments included views like “It’s overcrowded and not my idea of a vacation” and thoughts questioning the link between expense and luxury.
A user remarked, “Saint-Tropez isn’t for tourists. It’s for residents,” highlighting its limited accessibility and appeal.
Despite criticisms, many defended the beauty and luxury of the Riviera, pointing out opportunities for relaxation and the exceptional hospitality of high-end resorts. The French Riviera, including destinations near Saint-Tropez, is praised for its stunning landscapes.
According to Louise, strategic planning can enhance a visit. “Try the shoulder season,” she advised. “Avoid July and August. It’s too packed.” Preferred months include September, October, April, and May.
Louise recommends exploring other Riviera locations, mentioning their equal or superior beauty. “Use a place as a home base and plan side trips,” she suggested. Whether in Saint-Tropez, Cannes, Monaco, or Nice, numerous villages along the Riviera offer beauty, often with fewer crowds.
