On a planned day of hiking, five family members tragically lost their lives due to a flash flood in southern Utah. The victims included a Provo fire department captain and his family.
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office reported that the family arrived at Sunglow Campground near Bicknell, Utah, for their excursion. Heavy rains led to flooding in this scenic area, leading to the disastrous event.
The sheriff’s office did not release the victims’ identities, but the Provo Fire Department confirmed the death of Captain Spencer Long, his wife, and their sons. Their daughter, who was not on the hike, survived.
The tragedy unfolded late Friday when the body of a young male was discovered. Other family members were found on Friday evening and Saturday. The dangerous weather conditions posed a threat to outdoor activities in the region, according to CBS affiliate KUTV.
Support and condolences flooded in for the Long family. A GoFundMe page, established by a family friend, raised over $184,000 to aid their surviving daughter. The page highlighted the profound impact Spencer and Katrina Long had on their community through their kindness and love.
Katrina was also a cofounder of a medical spa, whose team expressed grief on social media. Wayne County Sheriff Micah Gulley mentioned that the search efforts involved several agencies such as Sevier County Search and Rescue, Utah Highway Patrol, and a helicopter crew from the Utah Department of Public Safety.
