Obama Urges Democrats to Prioritize AI Oversight Ahead of Elections

Former President Barack Obama urged Democrats during a private fundraiser in New York City to prioritize artificial intelligence as a key issue in their political agenda. He emphasized the importance of addressing AI ahead of the midterms and the 2028 presidential race. Obama warned that without greater oversight, AI technology could become dangerous, echoing concerns about jobs, privacy, and data centers raised by voters.

Obama shared the stage with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., highlighting the risk policymakers face in an industry developing largely within private hands. As reported by The New York Times, Obama stated, “This is something that is moving very fast in private hands, and if we don’t get on top of it, it can be dangerous. If we do get on top of it, it can be beneficial.” He noted potential benefits such as accelerated drug development and pathways for clean energy.

RNC member and Humans First Chairwoman Amy Kremer expressed a viewpoint on AI regulation to Fox News Digital. She acknowledged the need for policymakers to recognize both AI’s risks and opportunities but opposed granting greater control to the federal government or technology firms.

Obama’s message comes as polling from Fox News Digital indicates substantial voter opposition to AI infrastructure developments. A July poll revealed that 70% of registered voters were against constructing AI data centers in their communities.

Obama encouraged Democrats to prepare a clear AI agenda, with specific focus on job displacement and impact on children, particularly if they regain control of the House. He advised Jeffries to foster public discussion on AI policy.

Public polls in April indicated 63% of voters perceived AI as detrimental to privacy, while 56% saw challenges in job creation, with only 21% recognizing benefits in this area.

Obama’s call for oversight contrasts with former President Donald Trump. Trump has promoted rapid AI development and competition against China, unveiling a national AI policy framework that addresses free speech, child safety, and energy costs.

Concerns surrounding AI surged after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei advocated for slowing development, suggesting advances may surpass human control capabilities.

Jeffries responded to Obama’s call for Democratic action, criticizing Republicans for disregarding responsibilities in governing. He hinted at the development of an AI policy framework by House Democrats, expected for fall release.
