Former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., recently criticized War Secretary Pete Hegseth over his remarks regarding fallen U.S. service members during the ongoing conflict with Iran. Hegseth expressed sentiments of honor for the troops, stating, ‘Godspeed, heroes. Their sacrifice only stiffens our resolve,’ on social media after a post from U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) about the deaths of American troops in Jordan.
Greene responded to Hegseth’s post, questioning the notion of sacrifice. She wrote, “Sacrifice?? What are you talking about?? They did not willingly sacrifice themselves. They were killed because of the war you, Trump, and the administration are waging on behalf of a foreign country, Israel. You mean their deaths fuel your desire for a senseless war.”
Former counterterrorism official Joe Kent continues to call for the withdrawal of U.S. military forces from the Middle East, emphasizing the need to reconsider U.S. involvement in the region.
CENTCOM provided further details in a statement, announcing that two U.S. service members had been killed in Jordan due to ballistic missile and drone attacks from Iran on July 17. Additionally, a service member was reported missing.
In response, Greene posted on social media, offering prayers for the families and friends of the fallen troops, as well as for the missing soldier. She advocated for President Trump to withdraw troops and end the ‘senseless America last war.’
In updates from CENTCOM, it was later revealed that an examination of unidentified remains found in Jordan was ongoing. A separate incident in Iraq on July 18 saw a U.S. service member killed during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone. Another military member was wounded in this incident.
The situation has highlighted tensions between Greene and President Donald Trump, who had a falling out last year. Greene resigned from Congress in January during her two-year term.
