Discharge day in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is a highly anticipated milestone for families. It comes after enduring weeks or even months of medical interventions, including constant monitoring, alarms, oxygen support, feeding tubes, and numerous blood tests. This period ends with the hopeful moment where families can finally take their baby home.

Research underlines the vulnerability of preterm infants to air quality. Pollutants in the air, even in small amounts, have been shown to exacerbate respiratory conditions in these infants. Their undeveloped lungs and immune systems make them particularly susceptible to the harmful effects of polluted air, which can lead to long-term health issues.

Air pollution contains particulates and chemicals that can irritate and inflame the respiratory system. For infants with compromised lung function due to premature birth, this can result in a higher incidence of respiratory diseases.
