New York City was the scene of a troubling event when two men were stabbed on the Upper West Side. Officials described these as likely antisemitic incidents. The NYPD stated that one victim is Jewish, with the suspect reportedly shouting “Allahu Akbar” during the assaults.
Police are investigating the assaults as a potential hate crime. Raul Morales, 51, has been identified as the suspect in these incidents. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed ongoing investigations into Morales’s motive, highlighting witness accounts of his declarations during the attacks.
The stabbings occurred near West 84th Street and Central Park West, an area with a significant Jewish population. Mayor Zohran Mamdani, briefed on the assaults, expressed concern over the attacks affecting an Asian and a Jewish victim. He commended law enforcement’s swift action in apprehending Morales.
The attacks seem to have happened separately but close to one another. A 57-year-old victim was stabbed in the back just after 1:30 p.m. and was found stable. Shortly thereafter, a 50-year-old man with a stab wound to his torso was also stabilized at a nearby hospital.
Tisch mentioned mental health issues as a potential factor, though Morales lacks a prior mental health record with the NYPD. WABC noted that the weapon might have been a knife or screwdriver.
City Council Speaker Julie Menin voiced her horror via social media. She emphasized the palpable fear within the Jewish community and the need for solidarity against antisemitism, praising the NYPD for its rapid response.
Assembly member Micah Lasher maintained communication with the NYPD and local leaders. He assured ongoing support and updates, emphasizing prayers for the victims’ recovery.
Governor Kathy Hochul expressed disgust at the attack, stressing New York’s strength in diversity. She assured that antisemitic actions would meet legal consequences, reaffirming support for the Jewish community.
