The U.S. Park Police has released CCTV images and video from the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. They are asking the public to help identify a person seen near the water as part of an ongoing investigation into destruction of government property. The images and footage from June 19 show an individual kneeling by the pool and reaching into the water at approximately 3:30 p.m. The authorities are seeking to identify the person in connection with the probe. Anyone with information about this individual’s identity is asked to contact the United States Park Police Tip Line through [email protected] or by calling (202) 379-4877.
This investigation comes in response to heightened security at the site following President Donald Trump’s claims regarding damage to the newly renovated pool.
Trump’s Vandalism Claims
President Trump stated that the Reflecting Pool had been “gruesomely vandalized,” mentioning damage such as cuts to the pool’s lining and the use of chemicals. He assured his supporters that he had visited the site and found it already looking “perfect.” Trump claimed that those responsible for the damage had “largely been caught and are being prosecuted.” Although authorities have released images and video for the ongoing investigation, the footage does not show the specific types of damage the president described. Officials have not disclosed evidence to substantiate the claims about the scale or cause of the problems.
Controversy Surrounding the Reflecting Pool
The appeal adds another layer to a controversy that began when the Reflecting Pool reopened after a fast-tracked renovation ordered by Trump earlier this year. The president demanded the pool’s resurfacing with an American flag blue color, stating the landmark had become dirty and neglected. By early June, the project was presented as effectively complete, but problems emerged soon after. The water turned green due to algae blooms, and parts of the blue coating later peeled from the basin floor.
Administration officials have attributed some of these issues to alleged vandalism. However, the timing of the problems has led to scrutiny, as they became evident shortly after reopening. Experts suggest a range of factors could influence algae growth and coating failure, including residual algae, water conditions, surface temperature, trapped moisture, adhesion problems, chemical treatments, and environmental stress.
Increased Security Measures
Security around the landmark has increased, with fencing installed around parts of the pool and a noticeable presence of U.S. Park Police patrols. The Interior Department previously informed Newsweek that the barriers were planned ahead of Independence Day celebrations but were erected earlier due to concerns about additional damage.
This story is still developing and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
