The NFL training camp period has begun for many teams, with others joining soon. The Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers will begin the preseason with the Hall of Fame Game on Thursday, Aug. 6 on NBC. Week 1 of the preseason follows on Aug. 13.
The NFL regular season starts with a Super Bowl LX rematch between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots on “Sunday Night Football” on Sept. 9. Until then, offseason storylines for each of the league’s 32 teams are under observation.
Players on the Roster Bubble
This week, focus turns to the Chicago Bears and players who risk being cut during the preseason.
Roschon Johnson, Running Back
Once considered a key part of Chicago’s future in the backfield, Johnson has had a challenging period. As a rookie, he ran for 352 yards and scored six touchdowns in 2024. But a reduced role last season saw him play just seven games with only two carries.
The rise of Kyle Monangai, who gained 783 yards and scored five touchdowns as a rookie, and the offseason addition of Salvon Ahmed have put Johnson’s position with the Bears in doubt. There is a chance he could be seeking a new team by August.
Scotty Miller, Wide Receiver
Chicago’s wide receiver depth prompted their trade of D.J. Moore to the Buffalo Bills. Under the leadership of Luther Burden III and Rome Odunze, the wide receiver group appears strong.
The Bears signed Kalif Raymond as a free agent, and rookie Zavion Thomas has shown promise after being drafted in the third round. Initially a promising depth signing, Scotty Miller now appears to be sliding down the depth chart, risking a release.
Jaylon Jones, Cornerback
The Bears have a strong cornerback lineup with Jaylon Johnson, Kyler Gordon, and Tyrique Stevenson. Rookie Malik Muhammad also adds potential.
Other corners like Jaylon Jones, Josh Blackwell, and others are competing for spots. Being 29 years old, Jones might be released to provide opportunities for younger talent.
