San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a car accident earlier this month, which will limit his participation at the start of training camp. The team announced this on Saturday as the camp opened.
Shanahan suffered a concussion, broke his nose and several ribs, and sustained hand injuries from the crash. This information comes from a person familiar with the injuries who spoke anonymously, as they were not authorized to discuss the details.
The team described Shanahan’s injuries as “non-life-threatening” and expressed gratitude to first responders for their assistance at the crash site.
The 49ers will have their first practice on Sunday. Assistant head coach and offensive line coach Chris Foerster will lead the team, alongside coordinators Klay Kubiak, Raheem Morris, and Brant Boyer.
Shanahan, now in his 10th season with the 49ers, is well-regarded for his offensive strategies. Under his leadership, San Francisco reached the Super Bowl twice for the 2019 and 2023 seasons. They also made two NFC Championship Game appearances during the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
Shanahan holds a 91-72 record in both regular season and playoff games, ranking third in franchise history for wins. He trails only George Seifert, who has 108 wins, and Bill Walsh, who has 102.
Despite significant injuries last season, the team managed a 12-5 regular-season finish and won a playoff game. Shanahan was fifth in the AP NFL Coach of the Year voting.
