Fire crews in France and Spain are fighting widespread wildfires that have caused the evacuation of over 300,000 individuals across the two countries. In France’s Gironde region, known for its vineyards and the city of Bordeaux, authorities have ordered overnight evacuations for five additional localities. Shifting winds and dry conditions are complicating efforts to control the massive fire. The evacuation, which involves more than 250,000 people from one region, is one of the largest since World War II, according to officials.

The Interior Minister of France, Laurent Nunez, noted on social media that the fire remained unpredictable and dangerous, generating its own winds and erratically advancing toward the Bordeaux metropolitan area. However, the situation appeared to calm slightly by the end of the night. The area devastated by the fire spans an estimated 162 square miles, which includes vast pine forests and scrublands made highly flammable by multiple heat waves this year. This affected area is seven times larger than Manhattan and four times the size of Paris.
Efforts to halt the flames from reaching Bordeaux include both ground operations and air support, with planes dropping water and fire retardants. Soldiers have joined to support the fire crews’ relentless work. Other European countries have contributed water-dropping planes, helicopters, and additional firefighters.
Spain is also grappling with severe wildfires. Overnight, more villages west of Madrid were evacuated and a new fire threat emerged near Valencia. An Air Tractor AT-802F Fire Boss aircraft was seen working near San Martin de Valdeiglesias, around 70km west of Madrid.

The regional president of Valencia, Juanfran Perez Llorca, admitted to reporters on Saturday that the fire was beyond the capability of local efforts to extinguish. Pilar Bernabe, representative of the central government in Valencia, indicated that conditions were expected to worsen as the day wore on, highlighting the urgency of current firefighting efforts.
The fires in Spain this week have displaced 116,000 residents. Tragically, a wildfire in a ravine near Valencia resulted in the death of one man on Saturday, the first recorded casualty of the latest fires.
