Baseball Hall of Fame Inducts Beltrán, Jones, and Kent

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) — Puerto Rico and Curaçao, though small islands, demonstrated enormous support as esteemed center fielders Carlos Beltrán and Andruw Jones joined the Baseball Hall of Fame. They were inducted alongside slugging second baseman Jeff Kent before approximately 12,000 fans at the Clark Sports Center in Cooperstown. This gathering also included 57 other Hall of Famers.

Andruw Jones’ Tribute

The celebration for Jones felt deeply personal, akin to a heartfelt message to his birthplace of Curaçao. As the first player from Curaçao to achieve Hall of Fame status, Jones expressed hope for future inductees from his homeland, citing players like Ozzie Albies and Kenley Jansen. Jones reminisced about his father, Henry Jones, who was integral in shaping his career, by hitting him flyballs and building his wrist strength with a sledgehammer.

“Everything he taught me had a purpose,” Jones stated. “Henry Jones was a legend in Curaçao, a great player in his own right. And I’m not standing here in Cooperstown without his constant coaching. Dad, we did it.”

Carlos Beltrán’s Reflection

Carlos Beltrán received accolades and chants of “Puerto Rico” from the crowd. Throughout his induction, he highlighted his dedication to representing his island while playing for various baseball organizations. Beltrán shared experiences from his career, including playing with the New York Mets, which notably influenced his life.

Beltrán acknowledged the Astros in his career but omitted mention of the 2017 World Series championship tainted by a sign-stealing scandal. He thanked the Baseball Writers’ Association of America for his Hall of Fame recognition and expressed understanding to those with differing perspectives on his career.

“If baseball has really taught me something, I want to say is that I hope in life, we continue to measure ourselves by the same standard we have used to measure others,” Beltrán remarked.

Beltrán secured 84.2% of the vote from the BBWAA in his fourth attempt, while Jones received 78.4% in his ninth eligibility year. Kent was inducted by the Contemporary Baseball Era Committee after his BBWAA eligibility expired in 2023.

Jeff Kent’s Emotional Induction

Kent, known for his grittiness as a player, showed vulnerability during the induction ceremonies. He was notably touched by his parents’ presence, struggling with emotions during his speech preparation. Kent recounted a pivotal moment in his career influenced by his father’s promise of a pickup truck if he secured a college scholarship. The decision led to success in baseball and a lasting memento parked in his garage.

“It sits in my garage as a simple reminder that some of the simplest things can change the entire direction of your life,” Kent reflected.
