Democratic Insiders Criticize NYC Mayor Mamdani’s Policies

Two key Democratic figures with connections to the Clinton and Obama administrations have publicly criticized New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Former Clinton adviser Mark Penn and former Obama White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel have raised concerns regarding Mamdani’s policies.

Mark Penn, a seasoned Democratic strategist, criticized Mamdani’s proposed property tax plan. He argued that Mamdani underestimated the number of affected property owners. According to Penn, the plan’s scope could affect nearly a million property owners. This contrasts with the approximately 30,000 luxury homeowners previously identified as the plan’s targets.

“The $5 million figure was a fake,” Penn stated. He argued the city’s valuation system misclassified various properties. This would require homeowners to prove exemptions instead of automatic exclusions.

Penn warned that the proposal might decrease property values and deter investment in New York City. He also mentioned potential constitutional conflicts.

Rahm Emanuel criticized Mamdani’s stance on Israel during a podcast appearance. Emanuel recounted a private meeting with Mamdani, during which he questioned the mayor’s rhetoric on Israel. Emanuel disagreed with Mamdani’s past use of the phrase “from the river to the sea.” Emanuel indicated that such slogans could perpetuate conflict.

Emanuel also criticized the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). He suggested that Democrats should focus on winning competitive elections instead of what he described as ideological distractions. Emanuel stated the importance of concentrating on electoral wins to address issues like ending Trump’s influence.

Mamdani’s Response

After Emanuel’s remarks circulated, Mamdani’s communications director, Anna Bahr, disputed Emanuel’s account. It was unclear whether Bahr questioned the meeting’s occurrence or Emanuel’s characterization of it.

As of publication, Penn, Emanuel, and Mamdani’s office have not responded to requests for further comments.
