France Allows Evacuees to Return as Wildfire Battle Progresses

On Thursday, French authorities permitted 84,000 evacuees to return to their homes in southwest France. This decision marks a positive development in the fight against the massive wildfire that has burned an area equivalent to four times the size of Paris.

The return was authorized for nine localities that had to be evacuated. Since the previous week, more than 220,000 individuals were forced to leave their homes. Volunteers and firefighters have been working tirelessly near Lanton, east of the Arcachon Bay, west of Bordeaux.

Increased humidity, cooler temperatures, and light rain have increased hopes of controlling the fire. Local officials reported a stable night with no increase in the 162 square miles already affected. Firefighting efforts remain in full force with 2,200 firefighters and over 20 aircraft deployed. Early Thursday, rain fell in Bordeaux, to the east.

Sophie Brocas, the prefect for the Gironde region, indicated that lower temperatures might provide a path toward normalcy for both residents and businesses. “If that’s confirmed, we could foresee a return to a more normal life for residents, but also for businesses that need to work,” she mentioned late Wednesday.

Overnight humidity reached 80%, expected to decline by midday. Coastal areas await rainfall, which might extend to the fire zone. The temperature, which hit 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) previously, was expected to decrease to 27 degrees Celsius (80 Fahrenheit). The orange heat wave alert was lifted earlier in the day.

The fires have affected the Bordeaux region, known for wine production, forests, and tourism. Similar wildfires have also struck parts of southern Europe, including Spain and Greece.

In Turkey, multiple forest fires erupted in four western provinces, including Mugla and Antalya. Authorities reported evacuations as teams with aerial support battled the flames.

In neighboring Greece, three firefighters lost their lives on Crete, illustrating the wildfire emergency from the Atlantic coast to the eastern Mediterranean. At one point, evacuations in France and Spain displaced about 330,000 people from homes and vacation spots.
