The Boston Red Sox have experienced one of their most successful periods in franchise history. Even after more than a century of play, their recent performance stands out. Initially considered potential sellers at the trade deadline, they now seem poised to buy and even compete in the playoffs. The transformation remains somewhat mysterious, but their improved pitching and hitting statistics indicate it may have been inevitable.
Starting pitcher Sonny Gray plays a pivotal role in this turnaround. Despite being a coveted trade asset, Gray now anchors Boston’s rotation with their playoff hopes resting on his performance. This season marks Gray’s best since earlier high points in his career. His record boasts 12 wins and only 2 losses, with an ERA of 2.78 and a WHIP of 1.16. Gray has delivered quality starts in his last six away games, though he has yet to face the Athletics this year. Historically, the Athletics have limited success against him.
RED SOX COME BACK FROM THE DEAD, MOVE INTO POSTSEASON CONTENTION WITH REMARKABLE 14-GAME WIN STREAK
Meanwhile, the Oakland Athletics have struggled since June 11, reminiscent of their challenging run last season when they lost 20 out of 21 games. Although the overall performance appears dismal, it aligns with their strategy as they look toward a bright future in Las Vegas. The team is already nurturing young talent like Tommy White, who shows promise since his call-up.
In the upcoming matchup, Mason Barnett is set to start for the Athletics. This will be Barnett’s first start of the season, and he carries a 4.74 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP. His previous bullpen outings have been mixed, with high run allowances in July, and the Athletics losing every game he has participated in during that month.
With Boston’s record-tying 15-game win streak, they clearly hold the upper hand. Their superior ERA ranks as the best in baseball, whereas the Athletics’ bullpen ranks as the worst. Betting on Boston at -185 appears straightforward, but opting for the run line seems more promising given the relatively few one-run games both teams have experienced this season.
